In the 1530s, in Italy, a game called Lo Gioco del Lotto D’Italia was played, which was similar to nowadays Bingo. Then in 1778 the game arrives to France under the name of Le Lotto and only wealthy Frenchmen were able to play it. Almost one hundred years later, a lotto-style game, is used in Germany as a child’s teaching aid for math and language.
By the end of the 1920s, a game known as “beano” was played in Germany. When the caller says a number which is on the player’s card, he or she places a bean on the called number. If the beans placed form a line in any direction, then the player wins and has to shout “Beano!” to claim his/her prize.
In 1929 Edwin S. Lowe saw this game being played and brought it to New York. A year later, Lowe hires a Californian math professor to increase the number of Bingo cards with different combinations.
Playing Lowe’s game, a woman shouted “Bingo!” instead of “beano!”, and then the new name caught on. And in the following years the game started to become more and more popular.
In the latest 60s, under a Gaming Act (1968), the Bingo game was formalized in the United Kingdom and 15 years later The National Bingo Game was launched.
