After 27 years the jockey says goodbye

Jockey Richard Quinn announced his retirement from horse racing. The illustrious jockey brings to an end a career that started 27 years ago. “It\'s been in my mind for a while and it\'s something I felt comfortable with”, he explained.

In 1981, the 44-year-old rider rode his first winner at Kempton on Bolivar Baby. This year, he has already won 27 races, the last of which was the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes aboard Young Mick at Royal Ascot. “I was always looking forward to riding a winner at Ascot and I was lucky enough to win at the first meeting on my last ride which was very special”, Quinn said.

The Stirling-born jockey had a lasting partnership with trainer Paul Cole, highlighted by his victory in the 1990 St. Leger. Quinn also rode winners Strategic Choice and Ibn Bey for Cole in the French 1000 Guineas and the Irish St. Leger.

“Racing has been very good to me over the years and I hope I have put something back into the sport”, Quinn added.
